If you’re planning a luxury family holiday for 2026 or beyond, you may be torn between a classic holiday in the Mediterranean with its balmy beaches, ancient sites and culture-packed cities and the tropical appeal and palm-lined sands of Mexico or the Dominican Republic.

Both promise plenty of fun in the sun, but we’ve done a deep-dive on these destinations to report back on how they compare on value, activities, weather, food and travel time.

The Med is a long-time favourite for Europe family holidays, from Spain’s Costa del Sol, Costa Brava and Balearic and Canary Islands, and from Greece’s history-packed mainland and her many islands, to Croatia’s glorious Adriatic coast, the beach resorts of Turkey and the always glamorous South of France.

The best family holidays in Europe usually combine kid-friendly beach resorts and of cultural attractions. You can find everything from all-inclusive luxury family hotels to spacious villas, and there are plenty of options for all budgets and tastes.

Family holidays to Mexico and the Dominican Republic offer a different kind of paradise. Think white-sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean seas and stacks of Latin and Afro-Caribbean culture. Both teem with family beach resorts including luxury family holidays with all-inclusive packages, most of them up and down the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts.

Which is better value? Mexico versus Spain

While the Mediterranean is always popular, prices can rocket in high season, particularly during the school holidays. Mexico family holidays sometimes offer better value, as can the Dominican Republic with kids – particularly in July and August, when it's their low season. Many luxury family hotels in Mexico and the Dom Rep are newer and more spacious, and most have good facilities such as water parks, kids’ clubs and sports tuition included in the price.

In both destinations, you’ll find your money stretches further on the ground, and with more activities and facilities included than in many Mediterranean family resorts.

Mexico Versus Dominican Republic Accommodation

Gorgeous beaches, colourful cities and plenty of ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins to romp around means visiting Mexico with kids is a real treat. Club Med Cancún Yucatán is an all-inclusive favourite designed for families, with a fantastic kids’ club for kids and teens up to 17, several pools – some with water slides – plus a circus school, sports courts and water sports including windsurfing.

Barceló Maya Beach Resort on the Riviera Maya is perfect for families who love the sea, with an on-site diving school, plus plenty of water sports and activities, including paddleboarding, sailing and snorkelling, many included in its all-inclusive package.

Like Mexico, the Dominican Republic is not short of luxury family hotels. The all-inclusive Hilton La Romana Family Resort on Bayahibe beach is a big hit with families thanks to its brilliant water park, kids’ clubs and top-notch water and sports facilities, including an on-site PADI dive centre.

Also, a dream for Dominican Republic holidays with kids is the all-inclusive Club Med Punta Cana on one of the island's finest Caribbean beaches. It caters for families of all ages, but particularly those with older kids and teenagers. Along with excellent water-sports facilities – kite surfing, anyone?– It also has Club Med CREACTIVE, a joint venture between Club Med and Cirque du Soleil, where you can learn circus skills.

Activities: Mexico Versus the Mediterranean for Activities

Offering some of the best family holidays in Europe, the Mediterranean is a playground for children of all ages. Discover some of Europe's best water parks in Spain, go sailing in Croatia or enjoy island hopping in Greece. Many luxury family hotels and resorts in Europe offer tennis and football academies, kids’ clubs and additional excursions to theme parks or ancient sites.

Over in the Caribbean, the heavenly turquoise waters surrounding Mexico and the Dominican Republic mean snorkelling and scuba diving are in a league of their own. Many resorts include non-motorised water sports, tennis, football and volleyball, and even circus skills in their all-inclusive packages. And both the Dominican Republic and Mexico resorts are often within easy reach of ancient ruins, nature parks and cenotes (sunken swimming holes) for off-site eco tours.

Top Mediterranean Resorts for Activities

There are plenty of all-inclusive family holidays in Europe that cater well for active families. Ikos Olivia in Halkidiki in Greece has an award-winning kids’ club, stacks of water sports and a summer football academy. Club Med Opio en Provence near Antibes and Cannes in southern France offers a circus school, golf lessons and creative workshops. And Forte Village in Sardinia has its huge Children's Wonderland, Leisureland for teenagers and an aqua park, as well as a luxury spa to pamper parents.

Flights from the UK to the Caribbean: Is it Worth the Journey?

European family holidays clearly win on flight time, with most destinations just two to four hours from the UK. Mexico and the Dominican Republic are several thousand miles further, and direct flights to Cancun or Punta Cana can take between 10 and 13 hours. Plus, you’ll cross a few time zones, so jet lag could also be an issue.

But bear in mind that transfer times from airports to Mediterranean resorts can be longer than you think. Getting to a remote Greek island or a Turkish resort can mean a two- or three-hour coach or ferry ride after you land. In Mexico and the Dominican Republic, many resorts are just 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, so you could be on the beach with a cocktail in hand within only an hour or so of landing, watching your kids splash in the water.

What About the Weather?

Both regions offer plenty of sunshine and blue skies, particularly in the summer months, but timing is key. Europe is best between May to October, with July and August bringing the hottest temperatures and the biggest crowds (and highest prices). And as climate change takes hold, increasingly, October half-term is a great time for European family holidays, still with warm weather but lower prices and fewer people.

Mexico and the Dominican Republic both have a tropical climate and experience their best weather between December to April. Summers can be hot, humid and rainy, with a risk of hurricanes, but resorts are well-prepared and prices are always much lower. For families tied to school holidays, this can mean you can find some great deals – and still have plenty of sunshine in between the showers.

Food Glorious Food: Which Destination Tastes Better?

Food is a highlight in both destinations. French, Greek, Spanish and Italian cuisines are incredibly varied, but fresh seafood, grilled meats and excellent salads are generally a staple. Many luxury resorts, such as Ikos Resorts in Greece, offer cooking classes, as well as kid-friendly menus to appeal to even the fussiest of eaters.

On all-inclusive Mexico family holidays, you can expect the full array of tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas that kids love, plus fresh ceviche with its bold limey, chilli flavours appealing to more sophisticated palates.

Food on a Dominican Republic family holiday might not be as well known as Mexican cuisine, but dishes such as La Bandera – rice, beans and meat laid out like the national flag – are a must-try. Luxury family hotels here generally serve an extensive global menu alongside more local dishes.

The Verdict

Mexico and the Dominican Republic are brilliant alternatives to the Mediterranean for luxury family holidays in 2025, 2026 and beyond. Both are packed with fantastic all-inclusive resorts offering a vast range of activities, and time it right and you can get much more for your money.

However, European family holidays in the Mediterranean remain unbeatable for short flights, culture and variety. The choice is yours!
