Having just spent two days lazing around in my dressing gown, I feel calm, relaxed and ready to take on my two boys, aged three and four, again.
Far from being poorly, I spent the weekend - my first ever without kids – at the Tring resort of Champneys. Having endured the week in the run-up to my stay nursing both my kids through nasty bouts of tonsillitis, I felt in need of a little pampering myself. Champneys proved the perfect place to help me unwind with my husband.
Although this is a first-rate hotel, guests at Champneys sport towelling robes even during breakfast and lunch. Feeling somewhat overdressed in my combats and T-shirt, I followed suit. At the heart of the resort is the spa, which offers a seemingly endless choice of traditional and specialised treatments.
We indulged ourselves with a massage, facial and pedicure each. In-between we made good use of the hotel's swimming and gym complex, and even fitted in a game of tennis and a croquet match. There were a multitude of exercise classes we could have attended as part of our package; my husband did daily yoga.
Being was used to be known as a 'health farm', Champneys prides itself on its range of healthy food options. Information on portion sizes and nutrition is available for each course. However, it's not all about denial – alcohol is served for those who want it, and there's plenty of choice when it comes to desserts.
I left thinking that I really couldn't have chosen a better place for a mini-break without kids. The combination of therapies, exercise, good food, friendly staff and luxurious surroundings re-energised me - just in time for the school summer holidays!
