A Parents’ Date Night: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

When you have kids, finding/making time for your significant other can prove difficult. But not only is it important for adults to get out for some, well, adult time, it’s also vital that kids see that Mum and Dad have a life away from the school run, sports clubs, making dinner and everything else involving little ones.

This is why we are such big fans of the theatre. And date nights and musicals go hand-in-hand. This is because they’re the perfect escape from real life – just put your feet up, sit back and enjoy the show, perhaps with a cheeky glass of vino or a tub of ice cream.

We did just that. On tour and recently playing in our nearest city, Birmingham, ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ is a hoot – we were hooked from start to finish. We hadn’t seen the 1980s film, and without knowing the background story we were watching something new. The story of con artists on the French Riviera, it made for a very funny few hours. The touring cast, including the hilarious Mark Benton from 2013’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, and other familiar TV faces, were fabulous. And the singing was amazing. But do note that this show is definitely just for adults. Some references and even song lyrics we would definitely not recommend for little ears…

Musicals are a bit like Marmite, but we think this particular show will appeal to the masses. And to the masses it is being taken, with its UK tour at various locations around the country through to 2016. Meanwhile, Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre has plenty of other great shows (musicals, comedy acts, concerts) lined up for the next year or so, as have many of the other ATG venues around the UK. When you want to entertain the kids, they have a fantastic range of shows for even the youngest of children, including some wonderful performances in the festive season.
