A Family Break at the Holiday Village Tenerife, Canary Islands

In these penny-pinching times, there was a solid rationale behind First Choice's decision, back in 2012, to become the UK’s first mainstream holiday company to offer 100% of its hotel and resorts on an all-inclusive basis, including flights, in-resort transfers, accommodation, three meals a day and unlimited local drinks as standard.

If you’re new to all-inclusive family holidays, you might feel they’d be too limiting for your diverse brood, but First Choice takes pains to provide activities for all members of the family, while remaining considerate of other holidaymakers’ enjoyment. The key is to make sure you’re au fait with the timetable, especially in peak season – arrive late at breakfast at your peril!

The vast Holiday Village Tenerife in Playa de la Arena (also known as Be Live Family Costa Los Gigantes) operates as a First Choice all-inclusive from May to October. We found it hard to beat in many respects, especially the professionalism of its staff, the attention to detail and the cleanliness. Entertaining kids of all ages is the focus, whether in the crèche or in the football, swimming and stage academies – our high-wire coach wowed us with his humour, his cool hair and his love of the Foo Fighters. The resort’s smooth functioning has made it very popularity with families, especially those with younger children. This is partly due to the fact that all customer feedback is promptly responded to, with tweaks made where necessary.

With a shortish (four-and-a half-hour) flight, a year-round subtropical climate in the south, beaches galore, 419 volcanoes and a lush interior, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands has long been a major draw for Brits, and however cosseted you may feel in the family haven of the Holiday Village, we do urge you to do a little gentle exploring.

There are free tickets for guests under 12 (accompanied by adults) to Loro Parque zoo and nature park, but there are also some lovely villages and harbours to seek out. We recommend trips to the Parque Nacional del Teide, where you can ride a cable-car to Spain’s highest point (quite chilly!), and the huge Siam Park aqua-kingdom, with exhilarating rides, the world’s tallest artificial wave, and beaches said to have the world's first ‘non-stick sand’ (tip: go at weekends when it’s less busy).

Lastly, MustCat Catamarans from Las Galletas harbour are great for families – the Canarian waters are home to 70% of the world's bottle-nosed dolphins, as well as many pilot whales and green turtles, and, if you're really really lucky, you might also see some sperm whales.

On an all-inclusive deal, a family of four can expect to save more than £500 a week, compared to B&B packages. If you set out for the Holiday Village expecting good value, a little luxury (book a massage in the spa if you can!) and a lot of fun, you won’t be disappointed.
