Colourful, crowded and wonderfully unique, Tokyo is a futuristic metropolis where you'll find neon-lit arcades and spiky skyscrapers next to ancient incense-infused temples. Where to Stay in Tokyo with Teens

Shibuya 

This is one of the most popular areas for visitors – a buzzy district close to the Yamanote Line and with plenty of kid-friendly dining options. 

Roppongi and Akasaka

These are also popular, not least because they have plenty of parks and playgrounds, as well as English-speaking restaurants.

Ueno 

This another good area for a Japan family adventure. It's close to Ueno Park, where you'll find Japan's oldest zoo and the Natural Museum of Science and Nature. 

Ebisu

For those looking for a more suburban vibe while still being pretty central, Ebisu is a great choice. On the Yamanote Line, it has plenty of green space and offers a glimpse into regular Japan life. 

Ikebukuro 

Ikebukuro has more affordable accommodation for families but still benefits from easy access to Tokyo's major attractions and shopping areas.

Best Places to Shop in Tokyo

Jam-packed with shopping malls, hip clothing labels and unique boutiques, Tokyo is tailor-made for teenagers looking for a little retail therapy. Whether they want new tech or weird fashion, or to stock up on pop culture favourites, Tokyo is the ultimate place for teenagers to explore and experiment.

According to Japanese fashionistas, Shibuya 109 shopping mall is the place to go for the latest threads, while Koenji and Shimokitazawa is where you'll find the best vintage shops. Harajuku is considered Tokyo's streetwear capital, where teens can discover their own style. Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara is a massive electronics store where you can find all the latest gadgets and gaming gear.

Takeshita Street is a great place for quirky fashion accessories and beauty brands. Also make sure to check out Don Quijote – Donki to the locals – a Japanese discount store with everything from quirky souvenirs to weird snacks.

Where to eat with kids in Tokyo

Renowned for its incredible food, Tokyo's dining scene is packed with great family options:

  • Organic Cafe LuLu is truly family-friendly, with a brilliant play area for younger kids
  • Denny's Shinjuku Chuokoen is a Japanese twist on the classic American diner
  • For whimsical treats, head to Sanrio Cafe Ikebukuro, a quirky character café where you'll find Hello Kitty pancakes and coffee topped with latte art
  • For a more traditional Japanese experience, Ginza Bairin is renowned for its excellent tonkatsu
  • Gyoza Lou in Harajuku is a winner when it comes to delicious dumplings at budget prices
  • But it's not all about Tokyo: Japan’s second city Osaka is a great alternative to the capital

Things to Do in Osaka with Teenagers

Osaka has plenty of attractions for kids of all ages but particularly teenagers. 

Universal Studios Japan 

This is often at the top of every kid's wish list. Like its US namesake, it features The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Super Nintendo World and Universal Wonderland. 

CupNoodles Museum 

This favourite in Ikeda enables teenagers can have fun designing their own instant noodle cups.

Dōtonbori

After dark, head to Dōtonborim known as Osaka's Times Square thanks its neon signs, street food and karaoke bars

Shinsekai 

This is the city's retro district, where you'll find arcade machines, neon lights and 24/7 kushikatsu bars – where they batter and deep-fry everything!

Where to Eat with Kids in Osaka

Osaka is famous for its world-class street food and everywhere you turn you'll find street vendors serving ramen, takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (delicious savoury pancakes). Kids particularly love places such as Kura Sushi, a conveyor belt sushi chain where you play games to win sushi prizes.

Best places to shop in Osaka

When the kids want to get their shopping kicks, there's only one place to go in Osaka: Shinsaibashi Shopping Street. Packed with all their favourite global brands, Japanese labels and independent boutiques, it's the first place to hit with your credit card. 

Amerikamura is another popular hotspot. Considered Osaka’s version of Harajuku, it's packed with cool streetwear, vintage shops and sneaker stores. 

If your teens are into anime, manga and pop culture, head to Den-Den Town in Nipponbashi, where you can also find the best deals on electronics, cameras and computers.

When to Visit Japan with Teenagers

Tokyo and Osaka are both year-round destinations. The time to go to Japan for the cherry blossoms is springtime, from March until May. Flights to Japan from the UK are at a premium in spring, but book in advance with us and you can get good-value Japan family holiday packages.

Spring and autumn are generally considered the best times for a Japan family adventure – not too hot or too cold, with plenty of cultural events on the calendar.

Ultimately, the choice between Tokyo and Osaka (if you have to make it and can’t do both!) depends on your family's interests.
