Long haul family holiday costs

Cape Town has been named the cheapest long-haul destination in a Post Office survey of holiday costs in 34 long-haul resorts and cities. Other great-value spots named were Peru and Costa Rica, both of which have been boosted by new direct flights from the UK.

The survey looked at the price of a ‘basket’ of 10 typical tourist items, including meals and drinks, in each destination. Cape Town came in lowest at £48.89. Second came Bali at £62.56, just pipping Tokyo (£63.87) to the post.

The Japanese capital is among the 40% of resorts/cities surveyed where local prices have fallen year on year – diminishing the impact of the falling pound.

Said Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money: “Local price cuts in many of the most popular long-haul holiday resorts will help to lessen the impact of the weaker pound. More than ever before, it will pay dividends to do some holiday homework before booking to find out where meals and drinks are cheapest.”

This year also saw Orlando in the top 10 for the first time in several years, taking ninth place with £79.76. Other top 10 destinations are Cancun in Mexico (£74.26), Mombasa in Kenya (£69.41), Colombo in Sri Lanka (£70.61), Phuket in Thailand (£75.72), and Grand Baie in Mauritius (£83.70).
