Families Warned to Expect Channel Crossing Delays

Wednesday 18 March 2015

Ferry travel with kids

Families planning to drive to the Continent have been advised to leave extra time for their journeys due to new passport checks being put into place at ferry and Eurotunnel ports.

New exit checks coming into force on 8th April 2015 require security officers to verify all passports for the first time in 20 years – which officials envisage could lead to long delays at peak times.

The advice has been particularly aimed at families because more passports per car mean it will take longer to pass through security.

Ferry companies are concerned that the checks could cause such long queues that main roads may get blocked. Recommendations being made to passengers crossing the Channel by ferry or Eurotunnel is to leave more time than usual, to ensure all the family can get through passport checks in time to meet the booked crossing.
