A new survey by Airbnb has found that 43% of families with children under 18 prefer to travel to a new destination each year, and that 45% like a mixture of old and new destinations.

The poll also found that multi-generational and multi-family holidays are on the rise – 34% of us travel with grandparents, and 20% of us include friends on family holidays.

Meanwhile, 79% of parents think their kids would prefer to engage in activities on holiday, such as cookery classes, than observe them, and 78% think culture and educational opportunities are important when choosing a family destination.

Other changes are a rise in the number of dads helping to plan family holidays – 42% are involved in deciding on the destination and holiday activities.

Airbnb also found a number of new hotspots trending among family travellers:

• Osaka and Kyoto, Japan

• Malibu and Anaheim, Southern California

• Fortaleza, Brazil

• Valencia, Spain

Melbourne, Australia

• Princeville in Kauai, The Big Island, and Honolulu, all Hawaii

• Miami, Florida

• Lyon, French Alps

• Bordeaux, Aquitaine

Reykjavik, Iceland
