Report Charts Rise in Family Holidays Outside Europe

Parent family holidays

A report by travel money specialist Caxton has found that children today enjoy twice as many foreign holidays as their parents did and that 19% of parents aspire to take their children ‘travelling’ rather than simply on holiday.

According to the survey, families now typically take two holidays a year, one of which is overseas. And whereas in the past a holiday would be booked in advance, at a travel agency, there’s an increasing trend among parents to book online at the last minute.

Just over a quarter of those questioned say their kids don’t know how good they have it when it comes to family holidays – going on more foreign holidays, but also travelling to much more exotic destinations.

Although Europe continues to be popular with families, cheaper air travel is encouraging us to venture farther afield. In 1997, 82% of foreign travel was to Europe, most notably France and Spain. Whereas over the last 20 years, travel to destinations outside Europe has increased by 70%. Most notably, travel to Central and South America has tripled, and travel to the Middle East and Asia has doubled. This is compounded by the pound falling 19% against the Euro over the last two years.

Additionally, while package holidays continue to be popular with families, there’s a growing desire among parents to give their children an authentic experience, with 14% saying they prefer to go off the beaten track.
