Several Ski Resorts Open Early and More Snow Expected

Thursday 22 September 2016

family ski holidays

With snow falling across the Alps and a huge dump expected over the coming days (with more than a metre anticipated in some places, especially in Northern Italy and Switzerland), a number of European Alpine ski resorts have opened early for the 2016-17 season. Meanwhile, in North America, certain resorts in Canada have opened, and though many US ski resorts have had to delay their opening dates, temperatures are falling and snow has been forecast.

In Europe, Alpe d’Huez in the French Alps has opened part of its domain three weeks early (three runs will operate on weekends until the official opening on 3 December), and Chamonix is now opening its Grand Montet ski area (with full opening in mid December). Val Thorens in the Savoie and Montgenèvre in the Hautes Alpes are also planning to open early. Meanwhile, all slopes and lifts in Tignes' glacier area are open.

With huge amounts of early snow, Courchevel offered a free ski day for locals and visitors on 11 November. For arrivals on the official opening day of 10 December, self-catering specialist Pierre & Vacances is offering a 40% discount

Alternatively, French specialist Madame Vacances is offering 16% off certain properties for stays up to 28 December.

In the Tirol in Austria, Ischgl will be one of the first resorts to be open daily (from 24 November), while Obergurgl is offering good skiing on its upper slopes, Kirchberg and Kitzbuhel are consolidating on early-season snow on three groomed pistes, and Solden is expecting a huge dump.

In Switzerland, the Jungfrau region in the Bernese Oberland is now open on weekends until it opens fully on 17 December, while Saas Fee has already opened more than a third of its runs.

Other resorts to have opened early are Cervinia and Val Senales in Italy (where steady accumulations are expected in the Dolomites), Lillehammer in Norway, and Verbier in Switzerland. Also in Italy, Cortina, Madesimo and Madonna di Campiglio are scheduled to open soon.

In Canada, there’s been snow in Alberta in Banff, and a good fall has been forecast in British Columbia. In the USA, Killington in Vermont has a decent covering of snow.
