Field Studies Council - Family Nature Holidays

With locations in some of the UK’s most picturesque spots, Field Studies Council is the perfect choice for families wanting to spend quality time together whilst reconnecting with nature.

Field Studies Council is an outdoor education charity that wants to inspire the next generation to know more about and protect the natural world. During the school holidays, a selection of their centres offer families the chance to stay with them on family activity holidays.

Holidays are packed with nature-based activities that the whole family can enjoy such as pond dipping, bushcraft, minibeast hunts, walking trails and night hikes, campfire sing-alongs and searching for wildlife. They are led by enthusiastic outdoor leaders who will feed your curiosity with facts about the natural environment and world we live in.

Accommodation, food and activities are all included in the price, so you can focus on spending quality time together in the great outdoors. Here are the holiday options:

  • A Great Outdoor Adventure (aimed at children aged 6 – 12 years old): Do you and your family love an adventure? This holiday is packed with nature activities to get you outdoors exploring. Listen for rustling in the bushes and splashes in the pond, what will you find? Try conservation activities and discover the countryside off the beaten track with orienteering and navigation skills. This is a wilderness adventure your family won’t forget.
  • Autumn Art Adventure (aimed at children aged 4 – 8 years old): Celebrate the changing of the seasons and explore how nature transforms through an art adventure. This short break gives families the opportunity to explore the stunning and diverse landscapes around the Box Hill Estate whilst being inspired by its natural beauty to create imaginative natural works of art.
  • Elf School (aimed at children aged 4 – 11 years old): Get trained up and see if you have what it takes to be one of Santa’s elves on this jam-packed weekend of family fun. From festive baking to creating a natural Christmas decoration, complete the training to meet Santa himself and collect your Elf School certificate! A magical break for parents and children in the Surrey countryside, just in time for Christmas.
  • Family Marine Explorers Weekend (aimed at children aged 5 – 12 years old): This weekend gets families exploring amazing marine habitats. From coastal cliffs to sandy beaches, wildlife spotting and even a boat trip, there’s something of interest for all the family! Whether you have a young Attenborough in the making or have a more general interest in marine conservation, we promise a memorable experience.
  • Into the Wild Weekend (aimed at children aged 7 – 11 years old): A family weekend exploring the great outdoors on the Box Hill Estate. Pit your wits against the challenges of nature – can you hone your bushcraft skills to survive in the wild? Learn the skills of shelter building, fire lighting and cooking on an open fire. Take part in orienteering challenges and set mammal traps to see if you can humanely capture small mammals that visit at night.
  • Minibeasts, Mice and the Mole (aimed at children aged 4 – 8 years old): Get ready for a wild weekend like no other! The Mole Valley is the setting for this adventure. It provides so many superb and diverse wildlife habitats that are just waiting to be explored. Discover the amazing animals that live under our noses with river dipping, minibeast hunts and small mammal trapping offering plenty of opportunities for up-close encounters.
  • Nature and Bushcraft Adventure (aimed at children aged 6 – 12 years old): This family holiday is a bushcraft adventure for the wild at heart. Activity leaders will teach you how to survive and thrive in the great outdoors by equipping you with the knowledge to become bushcraft survivors!
