Coastal Active Adventure & Cruise
Turkey's Lycian coast is beautiful and packed full of history. This small-group family trip links you up with a few like-minded families and an experienced tour leader to explore the turquoise waters and fascinating coastline.
For the first week, you will be staying in the seaside town of Kas in a simple but comfortable hotel that makes a great base from which to head out on a variety of excursions and activities. Then for the second week, you hop aboard a traditional Turkish gulet boat for a week of sailing and exploring.
During the trip, you will go hiking, snorkelling and kayaking and there are many opportunities to swim - and of course, there will be plenty of sailing in the second week. You will also learn about the area's history, explore some of the many ancient sites and dine with a local family.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kas on the Turkish Lycian coast. If you opt for an early flight, you may have time to explore a little or take a dip in the hotel pool.
Day 2: Start the day with a short welcome meeting to meet your tour leader and the other families in the group. After this head out on a boat trip with plenty of opportunity for swimming and snorkelling as well as a barbecue lunch.
Day 3: This morning you will head into the hills to explore the cedar forests and charming hillside villages. Lunch will be taken with a local family in a typical village house before returning to Kas. On the way, there will be time for a swim at the silver sand beach of Kapitas.
Day 4: Today is a free day to do as you wish. Explore by yourselves or join an optional excursion to the Greek island of Meis (or Kastellorizo in Turkish).
Day 5: Explore Xanthos, the capital of ancient Lycia and a down with a fascinating, if turbulent, history. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, travel down the Xanthos River by canoe to arrive at the beach at Patara - a nesting area for giant loggerhead turtles.
Day 6: This morning there is the option of an early start (to beat the crowds and the heat) to visit the Church of St. Nicholas in Demre (Myra). Bishop Nicholas is said to have anonymously given money to the poor - perhaps the beginning of the legend of Father Christmas. The afternoon is free to relax or perhaps try some snorkelling.
Day 7: Taking a picnic breakfast with you, head out by sea kayak in the bay of Kekova, with various pretty islands and bays surrounding the famous sunken city of Kekova - earthquakes resulted in partly submerged streets and buildings, visible through the clear waters. Later paddle to the picturesque village of Simena with it's harbour dotted with ancient tombs, Roman baths, houses clinging to the hillside and a castle with an ancient theatre.
Day 8: Today you head to Fethiye to join the gulet boat that will be your accommodation for the rest of the trip. Fethiye is a market town with a history dating back to the ancient Lycian city of Telmossos. You will spend the night on board in the harbour.
Day 9: The day starts with a riverboat trip from the sleepy village of Dalyan to the therapeutic mudbaths of Ilica for a very natural 'spa' treatment! Afterwards you head downstream through an area rich with bird life, passing cliffs carved with dramatic Necropolis tombs before coming to the ancient seaport of Caunus and then heading on to Iztuzu Beach, another nesting site for loggerhead turtles. After a swim, you head back to the gulet and set sail for a tranquil cove at Yassica Island.
Day 10: After an optional guided walk on Yassica Island, you sail across to Tersane Island. Explore the remains of a watchtower and some tombs on this now deserted island. From here you head to Batik Hammam to swim in the beautiful clear water before sailing to Gemiler Island for the night.
Day 11: This morning starts with a sail to Kalkan, a village built on a steep sea cliff. From here you head back to the city of Xanthos and the Saklikent Gorge, high in the mountains. The gorge is 300m deep and 18km long so gets very little sunlight - the fresh spring waters are a great refuge on a hot summer day!
Day 12: Today you sail along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline from Kalkan back to the sheltered bay of Kekova. Here you drop anchor and have the chance to venture onshore or enjoy a swim.
Day 13: There is another opportunity to go sea kayaking again today and explore more of the hillside town and castle before setting sail back to Kas, with time to explore a little more before staying overnight in the harbour.
Day 14: The final day of sailing takes you at a leisurely pace back to Fethiye, with opportunities to stop and swim at points along the way.
Day 15: The trip ends today and it is time to head home. If your flight is later in the day, you can leave your luggage onboard the gulet or in the boat office in Fethiye.
This trip is suitable for children from 7 years old but the average age of children on the trip over the last few years has been around 13 years old.
Flights & transfers: Flights are available from a number of UK airports to Dalaman. The transfer time from Dalaman to Kas is about 2.5 hours. At the end of the trip, the transfer from the port in Fethiye is apout 90 minutes.
