With the most senior member of our party in her 70s and the youngest coming up to 2, a city-and-sea break in good-value Slovenia and Croatia seemed ideal. As well as visiting two countries, we hit upon the idea of splitting our 10-day holiday between hotel and mobile-home accommodation – the grown-ups loved the prospect of putting their feet up in a hotel, while the outdoor freedom of a mobile home seemed just right for the kids.
Our first port of call was Slovenia, where we enjoyed a three-night stay at the excellent-value 3-star Hotel Trst on exquisite Lake Bled just 45 minutes from the charming Slovenian capital Ljubljana – think Amsterdam, think Venice on a smaller scale. Then we crossed the Croatian border and hit full-on Med sunshine, Italianate villages and the smell of the sea – our destination Camping Lanterna, a large, lively holiday park on the seashore just down the road from the old Venetian port of Porec.
With kids ranging in age from two to 14 in our party, we were impressed by its ‘something for everyone’ offerings, including three impressive pools (one a kids’ pool), a range of family-friendly activities from volleyball to mini-golf, a climbing wall, and a great adventure playground from which my small nephew twice had to be dragged bodily! If boredom sets in, the kids’ club offers activities mornings and afternoons.
We found that the key thing to holidaying at a park like this as an extended family is not to all squeeze into one or two unit, however large, but to have individual family mobiles to retreat to when the going gets tough…
And though we were worried about the sheer size of Lanterna, we had no issues with noise and our mobile homes were screened to some extent by trees, so we had some privacy and shade. Lanterna borders the beach so you can chill out with your buckets and spades close to home. It’s also handy for exploring the pretty Istrian coastline, discovering lovely old coastal towns, such as Rovinj and Novigrad, along the way.
What I particularly appreciated was Lanterna’s on-site market with its fishmonger and organic fruit-and-veg stall, providing the fresh ingredients for great BBQs. There’s also an on-site sea-terrace restaurant that’s just the ticket for watching the setting sun over home-cooked fare at reasonable prices, from pizza to suckling pig.
