Winning itself scores of repeat customers and rave reviews from parents, the Vila Vita Parc is generally regarded as a good-value option when it comes to luxury family holidays in Portugal's child-friendly Algarve region – as well as an eco-friendly one (at the 2015 World Travel Awards it was named World's Leading Green Resort).

There are plenty of activities for children ranging from six months of age to teens, plus an extensive spa and fitness amenities including free yoga and Pilates sessions. Golf buggies get you around this vast clifftop complex, which rarely feels crowded – although you should pre-book restaurants (one of which is Michelin-starred) in busier months.

The super-friendly staff are one of Vila Vita’s greatest assets; less favoured is its small cove beach, which is tricky to access and lacks facilities, but complimentary shuttles take guests to a better one nearby. Some of the stylish and airy family suites feature home cinemas and espresso machines, or there are a few gorgeous villas sleeping from four to 10 people.
